As the city manager of Sunny Isles Beach, A. John Szerlag serves as the chief administrative officer directing the day-to-day operations of city government. John recommends an annual budget, implements the policies set by the City Commission, sees that all laws and ordinances are enforced, and assures the smooth and efficient delivery of services.

From 1999 to 2005 Mr. Szerlag served as City Manager of Troy, Michigan – a 35-square mile city with a population of 85,000. Prior to this appointment, he served as the City of Troy Assistant City Manager/Services for ten years. John’s other senior management experience includes being City Manager of Howell, Michigan, and Assistant to the City Manager of Riverview, Michigan.

John holds a Master of Arts degree with a major area of study in urban affairs from the University of Detroit, and a Bachelor of Science degree in administration with a major emphasis in public administration from Ferris State College (University).

John’s prior professional affiliations have included the Professional Development Committee for his state association (both as a member from 1993 and committee chair in 1997), the Michigan Local Governmental Mangers Association where he served on the board of directors and the Policy Committee, the Oakland County Transportation Authority Board, the County Executive’s Business Roundtable for Transportation, and the Board of Directors for the Michigan Municipal League.

John and his wife Debbie have two children, Stacie and Jonathon.
