New Program to Pair Two Valuable Assets

By Larisa Svechin, Commissioner

(Thursday, January 26, 2017) – With the new year come new possibilities. Our fortuitous City continues to offer both world-class recreation and exceptional education. Two of Sunny Isles Beach’s sizable assets are our seniors (greater than 2,500) and the school children (more than 2,000). While the former built our City, the latter will be entrusted to continue the growth and prosperity of Sunny Isles Beach. Wouldn’t it be great if these two groups could come together in a meaningful way?

Well, they can! A mentor and tutoring program is in the works. Older adults in our City, with expertise in math, writing, history, science and other school subjects, can earn some extra money as tutors. The children of NSE/SIB K-8, are always in need of experienced and dedicated tutors. Tutors would be partnered with students in grades K-8, based on the student needs and the tutor’s availability. While a teaching certificate is not required, prospective tutors will need to pass a background check and interview. This program will allow for affordable instruction for our children while giving our retirees some extra income and more importantly, a sense of giving back.
