Police Employee Supports Police
Charity Thur Tour de Force Bicycle Ride...
By Chief
Fred Maas
The first week in December was dedicated to the Tour de Force, an annual
bicycle ride by police officers and civilians, to raise funds for the
families of police officers who have been killed in the line of duty.
This year’s ride was in memory of North Miami Beach Police Officer Orestes
Lorenzo a popular and dedicated officer who was killed earlier this year in
a traffic accident. “Oreo” as he was known by his nickname, left
a wife and 3 beautiful, young daughters. The loss was devastating to the family
and to the department.
That is why close to 100 bicycle riders gathered at North Miami Beach Police
Department to begin a 3-day ride up the east coast of Florida. The entire ride
is 270 total miles. Our very own civilian employee, Ms. Sandra Block, who works
in the Investigative Division as an Administrative Assistant represented our
department by participating in the ride. Sandra has been training for a number
of months for this charity ride as well as other charities she is involved
in, including that for a cure for Leukemia and Lymphoma.
Sandra and her riding partner Ms. Rene Beaudry, both rode 50 miles the very
first day in support of this year’s Tour de Force. The Sunny Isles Beach
Police Department has always participated in this event in various forms, including
police escort of the riders by the motorcycle unit of the SIBPD. Previous riders
for our agency have included Sgt. Lee Athanasiou, Sgt. Bobby Randazzo, and
several officers both current and departed.
Sandra recalled that the weather was picture perfect and the people who rode
were great. That makes for a great spirit when helping others. Congratulations
Sandra, Renee and all who participated. Thank You!!!
