Shermin Davis - A Woman of Calm
and Caring
Lynda Peeler
One might think from the name that you are about to meet one of the male gender.
This is 180 degrees from the case as you would see before you a tall, graceful,
glowing young woman with a beaming smile. Shermin (accent on the min) was born
in Curacao where she spent her early years. Her father worked for Shell so she
had an opportunity to spend her 15th-16th year living in The Hague in Holland.
Living away from the tiny community in Curacao Shermin developed a dream of living
in a more lively environment. She decided at 19 to move to the United States
to go to school at Stetson University, gaining a Bachelors degree in Psychology.
Atlanta welcomed her to Emory University where she earned her Master of Business
Administration in 1986.
Ms. Davis came to Miami in 1987 where she worked successfully for IBM as a Marketing
Representative and Systems Engineer. Her project complete she moved to a position
with the Center for Contemporary Counseling. She did work for Jewish Family Services,
St. Francis-Barry Rehabilitation and Nursing Center and Villa Maria. Shermin
also is an adjunct professor for online courses through Phoenix University.
In 2003 she found Family Central, Inc. where she worked in an administrative
capacity for the Resource, Eligibility and Referral departments overseeing 65
people. She worked with the annual outreach program at Thanksgiving distributing
food, and “Adopt a Family” at Christmas. Seeing the needs in the
community she was prompted to return to school to become licensed in Mental Health
Counseling. This she did at St Thomas University. Presently she has a new capacity
with Family Central, Inc. She is doing treatment planning, individual and family
counseling, teaching problem solving skills, using behavioral strategies, normalization
activities, play therapy techniques, and other treatment modalities for the elementary
school age population; very fulfilling work.
Professional organizations of which she is an active member are numerous and
include several counseling associations, and an honorary fraternity. She has
volunteered for Baptist Hospital Auxiliary , the Parent Resource Center. She
has conducted workshops on various health care topics for major health care organizations.
Aside from her busy career she is mother to a 14 year old son, and wife to Jan.
Shermin travels with Jan, exploring the land while he explores the shallow waters.
Balancing all with calm energy and caring heart; this is Shermin Davis
