A Gentleman
with many hats, Herbert Abramson
Lynda Peeler
Not
too many people are reared in Des Moines, Iowa, even today, but Herb Abrams
reaped the benefits of the Midwest, continuing his education at the University
of Iowa. The Air Force was the next stop; then on to law school.
Miami was his chosen location for practicing law, which he did on Flagler Street
for thirty years. "I had a working man's practice, and did some real estate",
said Abramson. He retired due to health in 1996 and a natural outcome of his
practice is his present business as a mortgage broker and realtor, doing closings
as well.
Herb has been since 1969, except for a few years, Chairman of the Board of
Here's Help in Opa Locka. This drug rehabilitation center has been open since
1968 and has grown to buildings for the treatment area and dorms. The Board
has done the "Wing Ding" at Hollywood Circle for years, and this year are having
the event has grown into Bayside Park. The most recent fund raiser was at the
Diplomat last November where such heavy hitters as Dan Marino, Gloria Estefan
attended in support of Here' Help's efforts.
During his recuperation in 1969, Herb played golf until he became bored. It
was about this time Dave Samson entered his life. The first Citizen's Advisory
Committee began and Herb has served on it ever since, and this was just the
beginning of his civic commitment to Sunny Isles Beach. He is President of
the Sunny Isles Beach Cultural and Beautification Trust, where money was raised
for the landscaping of Sunny Isles Beach, and where he has been a "presence" to
keep the ball rolling.
Although asked many times to run for office, he has no political aspirations
believing he can make more of a difference as an activist and catalyst. The
Democratic Club of Sunny Isles Beach, where he serves as Vice President, is
another of his projects.
His wife, Barbara is a retired school teacher, and he has a son who is the
head of marketing for Tri Venture from Orlando to the Keys. He is a member
of Turnberry Resort and Country Club and is still an avid golfer, playing in
many tournaments.
A man of many hats and a gentleman to be around, Herbert Abramson.
