Traffic Safety
By Commissioner Gerry Goodman
Traffic has become a major discussion in Sunny Isles Beach. Collins Avenue (A1A) is our major North-South roadway. The citizens that live in Sunny Isles Beach wanting to leave their homes all must use Collins Avenue. I don’t believe this is what causes the traffic problems.
Sunny Isles Beach is a by-pass for traffic traveling north & south.
To go from Sunny Isles Beach to Fort Lauderdale airport, we take A1A North through Golden Beach, Hallandale, Hollywood, Dania to Route 1 and the airport. Those who go south to Mount Sinai Hospital or South Beach, take A1A South through Haulover Beach, Bal Harbor, Surfside & Miami Beach. Traffic in all of South Florida is a major problem.
Every morning you put on the TV or radio, and that’s all they talk about - the tie ups on all the roads. For people going to work in the morning and coming home in the evening, the solution could be public transportation. But is the public ready for this, and do we have enough land to expand our highway system? If our travels are in Dade-Broward and Palm Beach Counties, we all have the same problems. I go to meetings and there are plenty of discussions and ideas, but very few solutions.
Florida is one of the most popular states in the US for retirees as well as young families, and we must find ways to help solve our traffic problems, otherwise we will be living in “grip lock”.
The discussion at our last commission meeting in reference to the bridge on North Bay Road at 172-174th Street as a walking & emergency bridge only, came up because the fire on Collins Avenue & 172th Street shut down traffic. We must have more public meetings and workshops and input from the public before any decisions are made.
The Traffic Safety Committee meets once a month. It’s advertised in the paper and open to the public. All are welcome, come to voice your opinion in reference to traffic & safety.
As your Commissioner I am available at Government Center by appointment or I can be reached by telephone at my office 305.792.1752 or my cell phone 786.202.1120, or by mail to 18070 Collins Avenue, Sunny Isles Beach, FL 33160.
