Detectives Make "Big Bust"
Go a Long Way in Helping the Homeless..
By Chief Fred Maas
Sometime
ago, detectives from the Sunny Isles Beach Police Department armed with a search
warrant, broke up a stolen property ring operating in the city. This success
claimed
hundreds of thousands of dollars in name brand; high end clothing that had been
stolen from major companies. The job of inventory, packaging and storage for
court purposes was tedious to say the last. But when it was all over, the winners
became the needy in our
community of South Florida.
After much of the property was returned to its rightful owners, there was still
a significant amount left that could not be claimed or determined as to ownership.
Therefore, with court permission, the property was disposed and donated to several
programs for the needy and the endangered. What a great sight just before the
Holidays to see smiles on the faces of those receiving early gifts of clothes
to wear.
The
Camillus House of Miami, who clothes, feeds and shelters the homeless were
one of the recipients. Safespace for women in distress or with no place
to go were another recipient of the items as well as several charities.
We would like to thank the vendors who assisted us in making these donations
possible rather than seeing the property simply destroyed.
I would like to thank and commend the entire Detective Bureau for their successful
investigation as well as their strong work ethic in dealing with all that property.
Also for your kindness and charity to the less fortunate. With the cooler temperatures
we had in December, I'm quite sure more then a few of the homeless were very
appreciative of our benevolence.
