From the desk of Lewis Thaler
By Vice Mayor Lewis J. Thaler
I hope everyone’s New Year is off to a good start. I am happy to inform you that 2007 in Sunny Isles Beach has begun on the up side.
The new school is on schedule, and as reported before, slated to be opened in August 2008. If you drive past the site on Atlantic and 182nd Street, you will see that the existing building is being knocked down and that fencing has been placed all around the area. Construction should commence during the summer. A detour has been set up just past Publix on 183rd Street for work on the drainage problems.
Remember that we have an Education Committee that meets once a month and anyone can be a member. We need your help to get the school started on the right foot. The next meeting is February 12 at 7 PM. For more information call me at City Hall at 305 792-1754 or Bob Welsh, the chairman at 305 931-8625.
Time to file for a $25,000 homestead exemption is running out. The deadline to file is March 1. You must hold legal title to the real property and be a bona fide Florida resident living in the dwelling and making it your permanent home as of January 1.
Every person who holds legal or equitable title to real property, maintains it as his/her permanent residence, and is a legal resident of Florida as of January 1, of any year, can qualify for the exemption for that year. You will need your deed showing your title as well as proof of residency such as a driver’s license, voter registration, or Florida vehicle registration.
Good news for those of you who ride the bus – the bus shelters are on the way and all of them should be in place by March of this year. Thanks for your patience.
I am sure you all join me in congratulating Mayor Norman Edelcup for receiving the City of Hope Spirit of Life award.
