Get Out and Get Active!
By Sylvia Flores, Administrative Assistant to Director, CHS
Are you looking for a way to stay active? Are you searching for activities for your children? Well, the city of Sunny Isles Beach is offering a variety of programs for the winter and spring season.
Starting January 29th, we are offering recreational basketball for children ages 5 through 16. Practice will take place in the parking lot of St. Mary Magdalen Church (17775 North Bay Road). Practice times and dates vary by age. Participants will practice two times per week, and games will be once or twice a week starting in March. The registration fee is $60 for residents, and $90 for non-residents. This fee includes the entire season (from January 29th through April 27th) and the uniform.
Also starting January 29th, recreational cheerleading is available for children ages 5 through 14. Practice will take place at Senator Gwen Margolis Park (17815 North Bay Road). Practice times and dates vary by age, but all participants will practice two times per week. The teams will perform at the city’s basketball games, as well as compete in a cheerleading tournament. Registration fees are the same as basketball, $60 for residents, $90 for non-residents, and includes the entire season as well as the uniform.
For younger children, the city is offering Kidokinetics, a sports program tailored for toddlers. This program introduces children to a variety of sports in a non-competitive setting, to allow them to learn the basic skills required for an active lifestyle. During the 8-week session, participants will be introduced to a different sport each week. This program is available to children ages 2 through 5, and takes place at Senator Gwen Margolis Park (17815 North Bay Road), from 5:15pm – 6:00pm. Registration fees are $45 for residents, and $60 for non-residents. This fee includes participation for the 8-week session, as well as a t-shirt.
For our older residents, we are currently offering two different programs. The first, Tai Chi, is offered to adults (anyone over the age of 18), on Tuesdays and Thursdays, at the Sunny Isles Beach Government Center (18070 Collins Avenue). Tai Chi is a low-impact fitness exercise that helps improve posture, balance, coordination, and sleep quality. We offer a beginner’s course from 6:00pm – 7:00pm, and an intermediate course from 7:00am – 8:00am. Registrations fees are $30 for residents and $45 for non-residents. This fee includes the entire 10-week session.
Finally, the city’s Walking Club is an opportunity for our residents to get outdoors, stay active, and meet their neighbors. Walking Club meets three times a week, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, from 7:30am – 8:30am at Samson Oceanfront Park (17425 Collins Avenue). Participants walk around the park, as well as out on the beach, depending on their comfort level. This program is absolutely FREE.
Registration for any of these programs can be done at the Cultural & Human Services Department (1st Floor) in the Sunny Isles Beach Government Center. Please stop by or call 305.792.1706 for more information.
