The Stars Were Out in Sunny Isles Beach at the First Annual Talent Show
By Susan Simpson, Cultural & Human Services Director
Sunday, January 8, 2006 the Health & Community Activities Committee hosted the 1st Annual Talent Show in Sunny Isles Beach. The event was held in the Persian Room of the Marco Polo Ramada Plaza Beach Resort. The show was kicked off by a professional performance by the Kevin & Caruso Magic Show. This was followed by many talented acts such as children dancing, a guitar duo, many Russian folk songs, ballroom dances, violinists, and several singers and dancers. The performance was closed by the talented professional singer, Kat Jasmine who brought out the entire cast for a final bow.
Twenty-eight participants performed twenty-two acts. In addition, over 300 guests were in attendance to enjoy the show including our City Commission; Mayor Norman S. Edelcup, Vice Mayor Roslyn Brezin, Commissioner Lewis J. Thaler and Commissioner Danny Iglesias.

Though the show ran smoothly and under budget, many long hours of hard work went into this event. All of these efforts were coordinated through the committee headed by Chairperson Honey Scriff. Honey worked closely with the Event Chairperson, Spiro Colivas, for months recruiting the entertainers, creating line-ups, preparing the room, sound and lighting, hanging posters, speaking engagements, preparing budgets and advertisements. Fellow committee members, Henry Kay and Joseph Ades, not only assisted the day of the event but also with the preparations. They helped in the distribution of flyers and hanging posters as well as offering advice and support.
In addition to the committee members, other resident volunteers came to the event to help pass out programs, work as stage hands, keep the line-up moving, assist guests, and other important tasks. This made it possible for the committee to focus on the ‘behind the scenes’ of the show. Volunteers included; Gloria Taft, Bobbi & Gene Sweed, Anh Kaul, Ben Shelipsky, Arthur Weiner, and Lorraine Laderman.
Congratulations to the Committee for a very successful event! Everyone is looking forward to the show next year.
