Committee Hosts Dance Contest
By Commissioner Roslyn Brezin

As Commission liaison to the City of Sunny Isles Beach Health and Community Activities Committee, I am pleased to announce its first event, the Senior Amateur Ballroom Dance Contest. The event will be held on Tuesday, March 15, 2005 starting at 2:00 p.m. at the Marco Polo Ramada Plaza Beach Resort at 19201 Collins Avenue.

Honey Scriff, Chairperson for the committee along with her committee members, Joseph Ades, Henry Kay, Ben Kleinerman, and Alina Sosa-Perez devoted their first meetings designing the event and have moved quickly towards producing a quality interactive entertainment event for the residents and visitors of our city.

Henry Kay, a dance studio owner in his recent past has offered the committee a wealth of information. He is working with prominent ballrooms to hold the preliminary contests that will lead up to the final event in Sunny Isles Beach. Dance styles will include: Cha Cha, Waltz, Tango, Swing, Merengue, Rumba, Fox Trot. If you are interested in participating in the dance contest, please call the participating ballrooms directly as follows: Canadian Club 954.962.5097 (Robert) or 954.458.2936 (Eli) or Gold Coast Ballroom at 954.979.0770.

Preliminary competitions will start on February 12, 2005 and February 19, 2005. More dates will be added. Please call the above numbers for additional dates.

Marco Polo Ramada Plaza Beach Resort has graciously donated the ballroom where the event will be held. Trump Grande Ocean Resort & Residences has donated the grand prize of a two-night stay at the Trump International Sonesta Beach Resort. Other fabulous prizes will be announced later.

Open dancing will be available for the public between contests and admission is free for dancers and spectators alike. In addition, volunteers are needed to assist on the day of the event. To sign up as a volunteer, please call the Cultural and Human Services Department at 305.957.1306.

So whether you are a mambo king or queen, just looking for some great entertainment or interested in volunteering in your community, come on over and enjoy some beautiful dances performed by some local talented dancers. As with all city sponsored events, the free community shuttle service will provide transportation to and from the event. Hope to see you there!
