The Latest from City Hall
By Commissioner Lewis J. Thaler

Commissioner Lewis J. ThalerSunny Isles Beach finally has a Chamber of Commerce! We have joined with Aventura and on January 26, 2006 the first meeting was held at Homevision on 163th Street for all Sunny Isles Beach and Aventura businesses. Over eighty people attended the wine and cheese party and it is hoped that many more will be joining the organization. This is a wonderful way to network and tell people all about your business.

The City has “beefed up” its dog patrol on the beach. Due to many complaints we have received from our beach patrons, the police will be patrolling the area on weekends in addition to the weekdays that they are doing now. Warnings and tickets will be given to those bringing their dogs to the beach.

I have been asked a number of times about our new Town Center Park on 172nd Street as to why it doesn’t have public bathrooms. Very simply, it was an oversight by the builders and the planners. We are now in the process of correcting this and new bathrooms will be put in by the City in the near future.

The school is a go! Miami-Dade County has authorized and approved to take the land on North Bay Road by eminent domain and it is hoped that the school will be completed by late 2008 or early 2009.

Coming up in late April, the Commission will be going to Israel for the official signing with our sister city, Netanya. Officials from Netanya and Sunny Isles Beach hope to institute interest in both traveling and doing business with each other. If you are planning a trip abroad, maybe you would like to see the beautiful seaside city for yourself.

Do you surf the television with your remote? Did you stop when you got to Channel 77? This is our new updated TV channel dedicated to Sunny Isles Beach. There are new articles that are constantly being updated to keep you informed. You can learn what meetings are coming up, there are scenes of the city and some history of the past. There are offerings of trips to theaters, museums, sporting events including bus transportation, as well as a run down of what happened at our Commission meetings. In the not too distant future, our Commission meetings itself will be televised and you will be able to see and hear exactly what is happening in Sunny Isles Beach.

I hope you have a happy Valentine’s Day and remember I am only a phone call away. Call me at 305.792.1700 if you have any questions or comments.
