Recycling Collection REQUIRED
in Multi-Family Residential:
Enforcement to Begin
By: Robert C. Solera, Building
and CE & L
Department Assistant Administrator
Miami-Dade
County regulates solid waste collections and recycling for the City
of Sunny Isles Beach,:
Section 15-2.2
of the Miami-Dade County Solid Waste Code adopted by the City of
Sunny
Isles Beach, requires
all multi-family residential establishments
to provide a recycling program. Recycling of items and separation
of plastic, bottles and newspaper items from regular solid waste
items
is required. Those locations that have failed to provide a program
are in
violation of this section and it constitutes a liability to the owner
and more specific to the condominium association.
The section does
not dictate what type of machine or equipment the condominium associations
need to employ. Miami-Dade County regulates
companies that
provide the service by issuing permits/licenses, and also by monitoring
that items are correctly separated at their final destination.
Various companies such as Waste Management serve our city and they
can be
contacted by any of the associations for further information on their
services.
The Building & Code Enforcement and Licensing Department is preparing
a mass mailing to all associations in the City as well as to all the
unit owners informing them of the recycling collection requirement. The
department will begin enforcement of the requirements of the section
thirty (30) calendar days from the date of that letter.
Buildings with 25 condominium units or less that are found in violation
can be fined up to $300.00 and those with 26 condominium units
or more can be fined up to $500.00 per violation per day.
Proof of compliance to this office includes a visible system as
verified by an inspection from this department and proof that the
condominium
association has engaged the services of a company for the removal
of the materials separate from the regular garbage.
Direct your questions in reference to the recycling collection
requirement to the Building Department at (305) 947-2150 or Code
Enforcement and
Licensing Department at (305) 957-1305.
