Permanent parking on the grass in residential zones prohibited
By Robert C. Solera, Community Development Director
An ordinance that prohibits the parking of vehicles on lawns in the residential district is in effect in order to promote citywide beautification. This ordinance will also regulate the parking of vehicles on publicly maintained properties.
Code Enforcement and Licensing Department is stepping up the enforcement of this ordinance in the single family zones of the city. Some residents received warnings at this time. The Department has observed that existing driveways are not being used for the intended purpose. Instead the existing driveways are empty at times and vehicles are being parked on the grass area adjacent to them. Any work to correct or comply with the requirements of the Ordinance will require a building permit.
Building Department is available to all owners and residents to answer any questions in reference to the construction and development of driveways on private property at (305) 947-2150, and the Code Enforcement and Licensing Department is available to respond to any questions related to the enforcement of the ordinance indicated above at (305) 792-1705.
It is important to note that a permit is required prior to the construction of a driveway even if the owner is creating the driveway to comply with the ordinance.
We also like to remind residents that swale areas (in other words right of ways) adjacent to their property (see diagram below), are areas required to be maintained by the property owner as outlined on Section 19-4 Miami Dade County Code as adopted by the City of Sunny Isles Beach.

The joint efforts of the City Commission and of those residents who wish to beautify the City are beginning to come to fruition. If we all work together, all residential areas will be even more attractive and our City will continue effectively moving forward towards citywide beautification.
