Sunny Isles Beach is on the Move
By Commissioner Lewis J. Thaler

Commissioner Lewis J. ThalerSunny Isles Beach is on the move! There are more high-rise buildings on the east side of Collins Avenue and talk of new high rises on Sunny Isles Boulevard. We are moving forward, and here are some of our more notable projects.

The City is looking towards the future with the purchase of the land on the north side of the new City Hall for municipal services, inclusive of facilities for our Public Works operation, Transportation Program, and recreation activities, and in the alternative, a possible expansion of City Hall itself. We are also looking into the deeding of the property on the north side of the Rascal House for public purposes such as a park with public parking.

With over 1500 school-age children residing in Sunny Isles Beach who have to attend public schools outside of our area, we are presently looking for a place to build a new school (K to 6).

The school bus stop at 193rd Street now has a fenced area with pavers for the children to stand or sit out of harms way of traffic while waiting for the school bus. A bench and a trash receptacle will also be added, shortly.

The 192 Street Beach Access will be named in honor of Ellen Wynne for her over fifty-two years of service to Miami-Dade County and especially, Sunny Isles Beach. Ellen has a wealth of knowledge about our area.

Our City Manager is currently working on establishing a sister cityship with the City of Netanya, Israel.

Mayor Edelcup and the City Commissioner are establishing advisory committees to serve all the citizens in our City. The advisory committees are Transportation/Traffic Control; Education and Schools; Community Safety and Welfare; Tourism and Development; Long Range Planning; and Intergovernmental Relations.

After many workshop meetings, the Town Center zoning is moving along, and we hope to have it set and ready to go by the April meeting.

Time marches on, and as we are all aware, Sunny Isles Beach is no longer a sleepy, beach town, but a growing community. I encourage you to visit and/or call your Commissioners at City Hall (305) 947-0606. Let us know what you would like to see in our community. Come to the monthly Commission Meetings, and hear what is happening in our town. We welcome your comments at all times.
