Vice Mayor Lewis J. ThalerGood news for the computer techies!!! Sunny Isles Beach is considering proposals that will provide free “WIFI” service. For those who might not know what that means, it means that a person with a computer will have wireless internet service to send and receive emails and to go surfing the web. The Commission passed a two-tiered plan to research the feasibility of bringing wireless internet access to the entire city. The first stage will give people at ground level and up to the third floor of any building this access. The second stage will then include the entire building regardless of their height. Since this project is still under consideration, we appreciate any input and comments you might have.

This year, Sunny Isles beach will be celebrating its 10th anniversary and we are having many events to mark this occasion. There will be a contest for children, a family fun night at the park, a massive celebration featuring food, entertainment, fireworks and much more. Watch channel 77 for more information on all the programs that the City sponsors and join the fun.

Once a month there is a free concert at Samson Oceanfront Park at Collins Avenue and 174th Street. There was standing room only as over 400 people attended February’s concert.

On February 23, a beach access walkway at 189th Street was dedicated to the memory of Cecile Sippin. Many of you will remember her as being very active in Sunny Isles Beach and helping it to become what it is today. She kept many of us on our toes by writing many letters to the editors and attending Commission Meetings. I especially appreciated her backing my campaign for Commissioner four years ago.

Publix is suing the Sunny Isles Beach after the City turned down Publix’s use of off-shore property to add density to building a new condo.

I would like to remind all of our citizens that there is an information phone number provided by Miami-Dade County that you can call at any time. That number is 311 or 305.468.5900. You can get help with answers to your questions about your taxes, how to Homestead your home or condo, where to register your car or get a drivers license, just to name a few. Also Miami-Dade County provides free bus passes for those sixty-five and older. You do have to apply and bring proof of residency. All this and more can be learned by calling 311.

Remember I am always available to answer any of your questions. Call me at 305.792.1700 or come down to City Hall.
