Traffic and Safety
By Vice Mayor Gerry Goodman

Vice Mayor Gerry GoodmanAs you may already be aware of, the Mayor has formed a new committee system. The traffic and safety committee will have a new name and also new members; the new committee will be called the Transportation and Traffic Control Committee, it will have 5 members and the members will be able to appoint citizens to work with the committee. I will be advisor to the committee. The new Transportation and Traffic Control Committee will hold all its meetings in accordance with the Sunshine Law, meaning the meetings will be advertised and open to public participation.

The traffic safety committee worked with me for 2 years. I would like to thank them for their time and efforts for the citizens of Sunny Isles Beach, Mary Ann Eicke, Gene Sweed, Janet Cini, Irv Diamond, Lee Liebman, Loretta De Vries, also our staff at the City Hall, City Clerk Jane Hines, Susan Simpson, Cultural and Human Services Director, and our Police Department, Chief Mass, Lt. Rick Feisthammel, and Sgt. Daniel Guagi.

The City purchased a new bus and the future looks good for increased service, we hope in the future that the Sunny Isles Beach Community Shuttle Bus will run 7 days a week.
Collins Ave, our major roadway in Sunny Isles Beach, still has some problems, and the City is working with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and Miami-Dade County to correct some of these problems.

Our other streets in Sunny Isles Beach are still 20 m.p.h., many of our citizens do not observe the speed limit or stop at the stop signs. We cannot place the entire burden on our Police Department; citizens must be responsible. Also concerning the school buses, when a school bus stops and puts the stop sign out, traffic must stop.

There is a problem on 193 Street regarding the bus turn. The City is working with, FDOT and Miami-Dade County buses to correct this problem.

If any citizen has any question or ideas to contribute, I can be contacted at City Hall 305-947-0606 ext. 223.
