Ocean Rescue Is More than Saving Lives
Story and photo by Justin Broman, Lead Lifeguard, SIB Ocean Rescue

Justin Broman, Lead Lifeguard, SIB Ocean RescueThe Sunny Isles Beach Ocean Rescue Lifeguards always try to go the extra steps to make your stay at the beach a fun and safe visit. In case you didn’t know, the City provides special beach wheelchairs and walkers through the Ocean Rescue Service, 7 days per week. Although the chairs are stored at Samson Oceanfront Park, you can call the Cultural and Human Services Department at 305.792.1706 or speak to a lifeguard at any of the five Lifeguard Towers, and arrangements will be made to provide a beach wheelchair to any location within our City.

These wheelchairs are very stable and very easy to roll and maneuver in the softest sand, and even on the waters edge. So if you’re limited to a wheelchair, don’t let that stop you from enjoying the water and our beautiful beaches here in Sunny Isles Beach. Come and wet your feet on the waters edge. All you need is a license or form of identification and we will set you up with a chair that will be fit for your comfort. Our summer hours are 9:30 am – 6:45 pm.

Ralph and Peter, visitors from Germany, took a nice stroll on the beach using beach wheelchairs with the help of their friends and City Lifeguard Chris Torbert; they went from the Lifeguard Tower 19 at 192 Street to Tower 18 at 180 Street

Hope to see you soon and remember, always swim near a lifeguard!
