Commissioner Lewis J. ThalerAs it was mentioned in our previous issue, Sunny Isles Beach is now offering freeround-trip transportation to M ount Sinai Medical Center. Service is offered three times a week, Monday, Wednesday and Friday but reservations are required at least 24 hours in advance. You can also get to Aventura Hospital by using the regular Sunny Isles Beach Bus and transferring at the mall to an Aventura Express bus. Reservations, schedules and information for the Mount Sinai bus or the Sunny Isles Beach bus are available by calling the Cultural and Human Services Department at 305.792.1706.

With a targeted date of August 2008 for our new K-8 school, now is the time to get busy and start planning. Our next meeting of the Education Committee is May 18th at 1:00 p.m. in City Hall and we need YOUR input. One of the things we want to do is form a PTA and while it might be too early to include the teachers we can certainly begin to get the parents involved.

The Aqualina has started closing on their units and people are beginning to work on their apartments in the anticipation of moving in very soon. The beach walk by their building should be opened in May.

On March 30, the association of Chiefs of Police met at the Sea View Hotel in Bal Harbour to hold their Officer of the Month awards. Our own Sergeant Ray Atesiano was one of the recipients. Congratulations! Our Police force is one of the best in the state and we should all be very proud of them.

In case you haven’t heard, Bobbi and Gene Sweed will be moving up to the Palm Beach area after residing here for 15 years. Both Bobbi and Gene have been very active in our many City functions – if you attend the monthly Sunny Serenades, they are always there manning the hot dog stand. We all wish them the best of luck, we hate to lose them.

Good news for the residents of the northern end of Sunny Isles Beach. At the April Commission meeting an option was taken to buy the 3.8 acres across from the Marco Polo and create a park for all to enjoy.
