Be hurricane prepared
By Alyce Hanson, Administrative Services Director
Hurricane season starts June 1. Be prepared. Be aware of how to get important information, and know what it means.
Who issues the evacuation orders once a hurricane warning is posted? Where is the information available?
What should you do?
Who?
The governor of the State of Florida issues evacuation orders for specific coastal or inland areas when a storm event is expected.
Where?
The governor issues the orders via a news conference broadcast on the major television networks. Y ou can also get up to date hurricane information by visiting the Florida Division of Emergency Management website at http://www.floridadisaster.org/ On this website you will find information about the latest hurricanes, evacuation routes, shelters, and disaster assistance.
You can also call the Florida Emergency Information Hotline. The toll-free number is: 1-800-342-3557.
What?
As hurricane season approaches know which route you would take to evacuate and which shelter is appropriate for your needs. Pets and special health needs require pre-registration at specific shelters established by Miami-Dade County. Call the Miami-Dade County Call Center (311 or 305.468.5900) to pre-register.
Weekly shopping lists.
