City names members to 'Mayor's
Advisory Council'
By Bari Auerbach
The Sunny Isles Beach City Commission recently passed a resolution establishing
five advisory committees to the Mayor's Advisory Council.
Mayor Norman Edelcup explained, "When I became Mayor, it was promised we would
form a Mayor's Advisory Council which would bring the citizens into the loop
[regarding] major areas of the future growth of this city whether it be in education,
transportation, long range planning, tourism, development, etc.
"The Mayor's Advisory Council is made up of five sub-committees, each liaisoned
with one of the City Commissioners. Each committee has appointees [determined]
by members of the Commission to work on major projects we see coming forth in
the city.
"Even though we're limited to naming only 25 people on the committee, these will
be open meetings advertised [and open] to the public and hopefully more than
these people that are being named to the committees will show up and give their
input to the Advisory Council."
Edelcup also said the goal is to create "a flow of input" from residents so the
committees can advise the City Commission of the direction it should be going
in concerning initiatives people who live in Sunny Isles Beach want to see come
to fruition.
The committees, Commission liaisons and members are as follows:
Traffic and Safety Committee:
Liaison: Vice Mayor Gerry Goodman
Chairperson: Cecile Sippin
Members: Gene Sweed, Lee Liebman, George Berlin, George Newman
Education/Schools Committee:
Liaison: Commissioner Lewis Thaler
Chairperson: Bob Welsh
Members: Phillip Chernoff, Janet Cini, Irving Diamond, Marsha Greenstein
Health and Welfare Committee:
Liaison: Commissioner Roslyn Brezin
Chairperson: Honey Scriff
Members: Henry Kay, Ben Kleinerman, Herb Abramson, Trina Duluc
Tourism and Development Committee:
Liaison: Commissioner Danny Iglesias
Chairperson: Bill Lone
Members: Gil Dezer, Maryann Eicke, Joe Milton, Bernie Meyer
Long Range Planning and Intergovernmental Relations Committee:
Liaison: Mayor Norman Edelcup
Chairperson: Bud Scholl
Members: Arnold Klein, Gloria Taft, Sydney Davis, Art Kopel
"The City Clerk will have general meetings put together for committees within
the next 30 days [from March 17] and then they will be instructed about the Sunshine
Law and procedures for the committees," Edelcup explained. "Each chairperson
will also be required to start putting a mission statement together for their
particular committee.
"The committees have five [appointees] but [there is] an invitation to have other
members of the city attend meetings and voice their opinions. They can become 'part
and parcel' of these committees with the [appointed] members reporting back as
an Advisory Council to this Commission."
