"Police Walk to Raise Awareness
and Funds for the Less Fortunate."
By: Chief Fred Maas
The
Sunny Isles Beach Police Department is committed to community involvement and
helping the less fortunate as well as those afflicted by particular diseases.
This is where "Cops meet Community" in an endeavor to show unity and solidarity
in accomplishing a goal.
On Saturday, March 27, 2004, Lieutenant Dwight Snyder was the team captain for
a group of officers and civilians who traveled to Metro Zoo in deep south Dade
County in order to walk for a "Cure for Juvenile Diabetes Research." The team
was met by thousands of other walkers from many businesses and organizations;
all there for the same purpose of raising awareness, raising money and the hope
of finding a cure. It was a tremendous success.
On Saturday, April 3, 2004, we did it all over again! This time Officer Cary
Brizuela captained a team of walkers from our agency that joined forces with
the Dade County P.B.A. and many other organizations including Publix, Baptist
Hospital, Car Dealerships and Airlines in order to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy.
Once again, thousands of volunteers showed up, this time at Peacock Park in Coconut
Grove to help research and raise funds to find new ways to battle this disease.
For almost all, it is their days off from work and keeps them from hobbies and
sports they would normally be doing. But because of their spirit, their character
and their desire to help fellow man and the less fortunate, they do it and do
it with a smile.
I personally am very proud of them and I wish to thank and commend the leaders,
the Captains (Snyder and Brizuela) and every person who lent a pair of hands
or a pair of feet in these "walks to find a cure." Thank You!
