A 20-Year Time Capsule for Sunny
Isles Beach
By Richard
C. Schulman, City Historian
History is defined as an account of what has happened in the life or
development of a people, country, institution, a systematic account,
analysis or explanation of recorded events of the past and present,
important enough to be recorded.
Sunny Isles Beach’s
past and present is now a matter of recorded history.
In December 1998 the late Mayor David Samson appointed me City Historian
and City Photographer for Sunny Isles Beach, and over the past 7 years
the history of Sunny Isles Beach has been collected, captured, preserved
and maintained. This was accomplished through the collection of written
articles, photographs, video of special events, our local newspapers,
magazines and important documents, all representing the past and present
history of our beautiful City.
With all this in mind it was decided by the present administration to
share our past and present history with future generations through the
placement of a 20-year time capsule. This will be our gift to the future
era with ties to the past. This capsule, which is stainless steel, is
16 inches by 16 inches by 30 inches high.
It was decided not to bury it into the earth, or place it into poured
concrete. We will incase this stainless steel capsule within the David
Samson Commission Chambers to be opened by city officials on February
5, 2025.
Mr. David Udoff, a preservation specialist, helped with this time capsule
project. We hope everyone will be here in 20 years to witness this historical
event, as Sunny Isles Beach goes Back to the Future.
