Solid Waste Collection:
Garbage Cans, Who is in Charge?
By Robert C. Solera, Code Enforcement and Licensing Department Director

The City of Sunny Isles Beach regulates the location and storage of garbage containers in the City; in single-family residential areas Miami-Dade County provides garbage containers and garbage collection.

Recently Miami-Dade County’s Department of Solid Waste Management distributed new 96-gallon EZ Go Waste Carts in the City’s single-family residential areas. The dark green containers with an attached lid and two wheels have brought a standard look to the garbage collection.

The EZ Go Waste Carts were designed to improve efficiency and to work with the County’s automated garbage trucks. These trucks were designed for one person to operate. The trucks have an automated mechanical arm that grabs a cart, lifts it up, and pours the garbage into the truck.

Only residents that have paid the County’s $75 yearly waste fee received an EZ Go Waste Cart. Director of Solid Waste Management Kathleen Wood-Richardson stressed that “the county will only collect garbage from these EZ Go Waste Carts.”

If residents prefer a smaller EZ Go Waste Cart they can exchange the 96-gallon one for either a 35-gallon or 64-gallon one by calling the county at (305) 594-1500.

Residents can discard their old waste containers one of two ways:

  1. Place a visible note on the old container requesting the Department of Solid Waste Management to dispose of it along with the garbage. or
  2. Take the empty container to a Neighborhood Trash and Recycling Center. (The closest Center is: Golden Glades - 140 NW 160 Street.)

Two mailers detailing the new service were mailed prior to the delivery of the waste cart and an instruction notice accompanied the cart. Please be aware that the EZ Go Waste cart is the property of Miami-Dade County and must remain within the service address, even if the residents move.

The City’s Code Enforcement and Licensing Department reminds all residents that Miami-Dade County regulates solid waste collections for the City of Sunny Isles Beach. All fees and collection schedules are set by Miami-Dade County Solid Waste Department not by the City of Sunny Isles Beach. EZ Go Waste trash collection for our area is scheduled for Mondays and Thursdays.

The City Ordinance 2000-96 dictates the location and storage of containers within single-family and two-family residential areas as follows:

  • Do not place or store a garbage can in any public street, alley or right-of-way except during the collection process.
  • Store garbage cans on the owner’s property behind the font building line furthest from the street and not visible from the street, and do not cause a nuisance to surrounding properties.
  • Garbage can lids must be kept closed at all times.
  • Garbage and trash must be placed inside the garbage can.
  • Garbage must not overflow the garbage can to prevent the lid from closing. (Get the appropriate size garbage can.)

The penalties for violation of City Ordinance 2000-96 are:

  • 1st Offence $25.00
  • 2nd Offence $50.00
  • 3rd Offence $100.00
