Bring on the Good Times!
By: Sylvia Arias

Irving Kamlet and Connie Morrow present Sylvia Arias with a check from the Sunflower Society for sponsorship of campers. Our annual summer camp program is well under way and we are excited about all the activities planned for the summer.

Our "Fun in the Sun 2004" camp program is for ages 5 - 12 and will be running for 8 weeks, beginning June 14th and ending August 6th. As always, the camp is limited in space and therefore, we can only accommodate 60 campers per session. Each year, the camp popularity increases substantially by word of mouth, and this year, all the sessions were sold out only 2 weeks after registration opened!

Some families came very early in the spring to inquire about camp because they were interested in registering their children but did not have the financial situation to pay full camp fees. To better address this issue, we created a scholarship application process, sponsored by the Sunflower Society, Inc. The Sunflower Society has participated in many projects throughout the years to assist families and children in the community that are in need. Since the inception of our summer camp program, they have donated money to sponsor children in the community who cannot afford camp fees. This year, a special committee, headed by Irving Kamlet, reviewed scholarship applications and after coming to a decision, provided assistance to a total of 5 families, alleviating a heavy burden for those families in these difficult economic times. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Sunflower Society, Inc., and in particular, Irving Kamlet and Connie Morrow-March, for their generosity in sponsoring these children and allowing them the opportunity to participate in an exciting and fostering program.

Now that camp is underway, we have a whirlwind of activities planned. The weeks are divided into 4 sessions, each with themes and fun-filled field trips. The information for each session/week is provided below!

Our "Camp Tot-Lot 2004" program, a part-time summer camp geared towards toddlers aged 3 and 4, is also up and running for 8 weeks, beginning June 15th and ending August 5th. The toddlers will be enjoying sessions on Kindermusik, Yoga, and Kidokinetics, with all activities taking place at the parish hall of St. Mary Magdalen Church. This will be our second year providing a toddler summer camp and space is limited to 20 campers. We still have a few spots left, so if you are interested, make sure you come by City Hall, or call (305) 947-0606, ext. 252, for more information on any of our recreation programs.
