City of Sunny Isles Logo

From the desk of Lewis Thaler
By Vice Mayor Lewis J. Thaler

Traditionally when school is over and before people either go up North or take vacations, May and June are months of final meetings and year-end functions. It is a way to thank people for their support and/or assistance during the year. In keeping with this tradition, I would like to thank the Police Department for keeping traffic moving during the Memorial Day weekend and the Ocean Rescue crew for doing a GREAT job in keeping our beaches safe. During the two weeks that we had strong winds and rip currents, there were many rescues and no loss of life. Remember to observe the flags by the life guard stand and keep out of the ocean when it is indicated. While it is fun to ride the waves, your life is more important.

A big thank you goes to Alyce Hanson, Administrative Services Director; Susan Simpson, Cultural & Human Services Director; their staffs and the Tenth Anniversary Committee, consisting of resident volunteers: Janet Cini, Dee Duggin, Trina Duluc, Loretta Mufson and Madi Thaler. They worked long and hard, planning and putting together all the components necessary for Sunny Isles Beach’s Tenth Anniversary celebration. From selecting the best entertainment, to creating contests for the children to participate, to tasting the food for everyone to enjoy and the many other details too many to list, no detail was too small. We hope that you joined us on June 14, 15 and 16 for the fun-full days and evenings. Thanks also go to the volunteers, other city staff, and the Police Department and Public Works employees who helped to make this event a success.

I wanted to let you know that the bathrooms at Pier Park are finally opened. Fortune Development turned the keys over to the City in mid-May.

While most of us know that the hurricane season is here, it is important to be prepared. Last year was quiet. But, unfortunately, it doesn’t mean that this year will be the same. Don’t forget to keep bottled water and food that doesn’t require cooking or refrigeration in your home or apartment. Check your flashlights and anything that needs batteries. Also if you have a generator, check it and make sure it is working.

Last but not least, if anyone in your household has special needs, is disabled or using medical equipment that is operated by electricity, you must register with Miami-Dade County’s Emergency Evacuation Assistance Program. For an application call: 311 (305.468.5900), TDD 305.468.5402.
Madi and I wish you a pleasant and safe summer whether you stay in Sunny Isles Beach or travel the world.
