"Sandlot Softball Turns Out To Be A Grand Slam of Fun For SIB Employees"
By Pietro Ricci, Athletics Program Coordinator

Program Coordinator Sylvia Arias waiting for the right pitch to swingOn Thursday, July 1st, Sunny Isles Beach Police along with City Hall employees formed a team and joined together in a friendly softball match against the City of North Miami Parks & Recreation Department. The game took place at Highland Oaks Park located in Aventura. With the sun beaming down on the field, the players took the field with confidence.

Teammates gather at the end to shake handsThrough the first inning, the score was tied 4-4. Both teams came out swinging the bat with poise. The next couple of innings were filled with action! From big line-drives on offense, to easy-outs on defense, SIB was feeling calm and confident. Every player on the team put their effort into the game, but would it be enough to catch the win?

Lt. Mike Grandinetti shows no sign of weaknessIn the last inning, North Miami put up three runs ahead of SIB on the scoreboard. Batting last in the inning, SIB was faced with elimination. Successfully, two runs scored in the inning with one out remaining. With a man on base, SIB had the chance of tying, or winning the game. Unfortunately, the third and final out was made and SIB fell one point short of a win.

Athletics Program Coordinator Pietro Ricci takes a big swing with the batWhen the bats and gloves were dropped, both teams came to the middle of the field and shook hands with each other. Both teams played very well and everyone enjoyed it very much. Considering that the SIB Police and the SIB City Hall employees had never played together, the team looked great and full of talent. Watch out for more games to be played through this summer, as SIB prepares for their next match. Batter up!

Marsha is safe at third and goes on later to cross home plate and score a run.

Code Enforcement Officer Julio Davila takes aim for the out.
