Non-conforming window signs enforcement begins
By Robert C. Solera, Community Development Director
On March 15, 2007 the City of Sunny Isles Beach passed and adopted a revision to the Land Development Regulations (LDRs) Section 265-51, 265-56 and 265-57 that addressed window signs definition, non-conforming window signs, temporary window signs, and directional signs.
All signs that do not conform to the City’s new requirements are considered to be illegal and shall be completely removed from the premises or altered to conform.
The Planning & Zoning Department in conjunction with the Code Enforcement & Licensing Department has mailed letters to property owners to remind them that the time for compliance for all non-conforming signs has expired. As a result, we have received a number of calls regarding clarification as to the sign requirements. The best option is to hire a sign contractor that is registered with the Building Department to do work within the city. A registered contractor will be able to determine, based on the code section, if the sign is in compliance or if any adjustments need to be made in order to comply.
The Land Development Regulation’s sign section of the Code is very specific as to what types of sign are allowed and what guidelines the signs must follow for approval. Based on the Code, the City Manager or its designee may and can cause the removal of any sign that does not comply with the requirements of the Code.
Code Enforcement Officers will be enforcing these new regulations beginning shortly; officers will be performing a sweep of the City in their respective zones verifying that all signs have complied with the indicated regulations and will be issuing warnings to all business owners and property owner to acquire compliance.
