“Water Safety for Everyone”
By Chief Fred Maas Sunny Isles Beach Police Department
Summertime is here and one of the most favorite past times is the water. Whether it be the beach, the pool, the lake, or other methods of cooling off in water, we all need to exercise good water safety conduct and drowning prevention.
The Sunny Isles Beach Police Department cares about you, your child, and your safety. Listed below are just a few of the generic but necessary tips for water safety and drowning prevention. There are classes for learning how to swim and overcoming fear of the water. Check your informational directories and local organizations for the classes and times convenient for you!
SAFETY TIPS AND DROWING PREVENTION TIPS FOR CHILDREN
- NEVER leave children unsupervised in or around a body of water. Children can drown in as little as 2 inches of water.
- Teach children water and swimming skills.
- During pool parties of family beach gatherings, designate an adult to watch the children.
- Don’t rely on flotation devices only to protect your children in the water.
- Keep lifesaving equipment – a pole, life preserver and rope – in the pool area.
- Remove any toys that may attract children to the pool area.
- Avoid keeping water in buckets or other large containers when toddlers are home.
- Children with long hair should clip it back or wear a cap in the pool.
- Install a pool cover to securely cover the water area.
- Alarm every door leading to water to alert you if a child has gone outside.
- Install a self-closing gate around the pool.
- Install a poolside, cordless phone.
