"Plaza" Kids March on Police Station..
By Chief Fred Maas
Yes
they did! On July 22, 2004 before the City Commission Meeting, more than 50 of
them, with adult counselors and chaperones of course leading the way. And why?
To say thanks, and cheer and smile and show their heartfelt appreciation for
what they had received from the police department with City Commission approval.
You see, thru a conversation with Plaza
of the Americas President Kathleen Kennedy, an idea came about to help
keep the kids occupied and fit during the summer months thru sports
and activities. The police department saw it as an opportunity to do
crime prevention on a pro-active level and work with our kids. So together,
a partnership was formed.
Basketballs and backboards and hoops were
purchased. Volleyballs and nets and ping pong tables and children's
equipment for all ages was purchased and delivered to a most receptive
group of kids. And not only that, T-shirts identifying them as active
participants in the "Plaza Program" were ordered for all the kids wishing
to participate.
And that's why the kids marched under the
appreciative leadership of Kathleen Kennedy and Dora and staff and
parents, the kids just wanted to say an excited "Thank You".
When I addressed them I had the most wonderful
warm feeling in my heart because I saw those faces filled with excitement
and hope and fun and energy. This was a wonderful thing and I had a
very special time being a part of it . It brought back fond memories
of my teaching and coaching days and I look forward to those City Sponsored
Leagues and Events that we can all contribute to. Because as Kathleen
Kennedy put it best: "These Kids are our future; and we hold the keys".
Thanks Kids, Thanks Kathleen and staff and Thanks Commissioners for
saying "yes".
