Newport Beachside Resort
The
Newport Beachside Resort, 16701 Collins Avenue, was built in 1967. The
façade of this ten-story building included a coral column and at its
entrance a lighthouse, which became a beacon for tourists.
The main lobby of the Newport has comfortable chairs for relaxation, brisk
activity and a tropical feel. The tropical motif continues with hand-painted
tiles of birds and flora on the walls, live indoor plants, and artwork. A spiral
staircase invites visitors from the main lobby to shops and restaurants to
the level below.
Even though the landmark lighthouse was demolished in 2004, the Newport Beachside
Resort remains a popular tourist destination.

During the 1980's the Newport
Beachside Resort became well-known for its nightly entertainment in
its two clubs: the Atlantis Room and Seven Seas. Long-time manager
David Broman said, "The paying guests would walk on a red carpet up
the stairs from the center of the lobby to the show's engagements."
There were lounge acts, stand-up comics, musical revues, and extravagant productions
with showgirls and dancers. Big-name stars included: comedians such as, Jackie
Mason, and Martin & Rossi; singers such as: James Brown, Wayne Cochran,
Eddie Fisher, Tony Martin, Ike and Tina Turner and Jerry Vale. The Pub Restaurant
was famous for its prime rib dinners and long lines of people sometimes 50
to 100 deep. The restaurant now serves an international menu and maintains
its elegant ambiance. In 1967 a full steak dinner cost $4.95.

The
Newport Beachside Resort swimming pool has always been one of the main
attractions for its guests. The refreshing water sparkles in the Florida
sun while happy guests sun bathe on comfortable lounge chairs.
Amidst the aroma of suntan lotion and ocean breezes adults treat themselves
to a tropical drink at the Coconuts Pool Bar, while children laugh and play
around the pool.

Originally
built in 1936 by the Miami Beach Fishing Pier, Inc., this T-shaped
pier was 887 feet long. In 1940 and 1945 additions were made to the
pier. In 1947 a hurricane washed away its outer 400 feet, and in 1953
its outer part was rebuilt with steel supports. On January 21, 1982
the ½ mile-long pier was designated an historic site.
Also, in 1982 a real-estate
investor, Dr. Robert Cornfeld showed an interest in re-building the pier.
He applied for a certificate of appropriateness to preserve the pier,
and for an interest grant fund to offset the cost of restoration. In
1984 Dr. Cornfeld purchased the Newport Beachside Resort and the pier,
which Miami Dade-County had designated as an unsafe structure and was
about to tear down.
The pier was re-built in 1988 by the Army Corps of Engineers. The Newport Fishing
Pier remains a very popular spot for Sunny Isles Beach residents and tourists
from all around the world.
