Abuse Is Not Something You Have to Live With…
By Chief Fred Maas, SIB Police Department
We often hear the word “Abuse” in so many different situations and incidents in today’s society. The news media headlines their newscasts with tragic reports of child abuse, domestic abuse, animal abuse, and abuse or negligence of the elderly. The reports are often horrific, unbelievable and many times have led to the ultimate, death.
Oftentimes, people do not know how to deal with or report instances of abuse. They either don’t want to get involved or they truly don’t know whom to turn to for help.
The purpose of this message is to accomplish several things. First and foremost to educate people that in today’s society there is NO reason to be a victim of or be fearful of reporting ABUSE. Whether it is to you personally, a family member or even someone you just know, there is NO REASON for them to continue in an abusive situation. There is HELP!
In the case of children, the Department of Children and Families have hotlines, counselors, family programs for help. In the case of Domestic Violence, the State Attorney’s Office have the same avenues of help as does your police department which include brochures and counselors and tips on how to report and how to get help.
The same holds true for seniors and elderly citizens. I have often times referred to them as “society’s forgotten ones.” Many are alone, having outlived their spouse or family members. Some are victims of children who don’t want to be bothered or don’t have time for their parents. Some have simply fallen victim to the perils of growing old and loneliness.
But in any case, for any reason, there is NO excuse for any of them to be handled in an ABUSIVE manner. They may be incapable of reporting this themselves. But knowledge of whom to call and where to call is a powerful and helpful tool.
