City, Police and Businesses
of Sunny Isles Beach Team Up for "National Night Out"
By Chief Fred Maas and Detective Stephen Brenton
On
Tuesday, August 3, 2004, several divisions of Sunny Isles City Government teamed
up with local businesses to present "National Night Out" a national campaign
for crime prevention, awareness and child protection services.
Amidst the threatening skies and already soggy terrain from daily rains, employees
and residents alike teamed up to show support for this anti-crime campaign.
The
pocket park located in Golden Shores 201 - 191 Terrace and Atlantic Blvd
was the scene of our gathering. The purpose is to bring community and public
safety together in a stance against crime. Similar programs occur on the
same night on the local, state and national levels. Although our turnout
was limited and it was our first showing, we all learned from the experience
so that next year's event will be bigger and promisingly better.
Members of the Cultural and Human Services Division, Public Works, the Police
Department, and Christine Lee's restaurant all donated time, effort and products
to complete the event.
Fun
and games and food were all available to people of all ages and for the
children, a serious side of Child Identification Kits were provided to
parents for future use if ever necessary. In today's world we all are clearly
aware of the need to protect our little ones anyway we can and Child Identification
in an emergency is a MUST.
It
would be impossible to mention everyone who contributed to this program,
besides they know who they are. We do wish to acknowledge the support of
everyone from the City Manager, to Susan and Sylvia, from Cultural & Human
Services, Jim Watt's people from Public Works, and of course the program
coordinator Detective Stephen Brenton.
A
special note of thanks to Mary Lee of Christine Lee's World Famous Restaurant,
who not only provided the wonderful food for the event but personally showed
up even in the inclement weather to serve everyone and oversee that all
were well taken care of . There is nothing better than the partnerships
we have formed between public safety and our business community.
Next year we promise an earlier start, better communication and a resident involvement
to make it a grand event.
Till then, be safe, be vigilant and call when you need us.
