Concerned Citizens celebrates
Officers of the Month Officer Raul Diaz & Officer Gordon Director
By Lynda Peeler
"Two Officers stand before you today who are the epitome of the pledge of five
years ago." said Chief Maas. "When I was promoted to Chief in 1999 I made a public
and personal commitment to seek out .the best quality officers who were expected
to have an unusual makeup of many qualities including professionalism, integrity,
good work ethic, compassion and dedication. .They must love the community they
serve as much as the community supports and respects them."
Officer Raul Diaz has been a police officer for less than five years; Officer
Gordon Director brings to Sunny Isles Police Department more than 30 years experience.
Similar though different, these officers bridge a gap of several generations
of policing.
The first week on the job, Officer Diaz showed initiative while working the night
shift. He would get out of his patrol vehicle and walk into areas not easily
accessible by car to check for subjects and transients who may be hiding out,
and for stolen vehicles that had been dumped. His efforts were often successful
through finding stolen vehicles, and wanted subjects, thereby insuring neighborhood
safety. He is one of the most popular officers, being quick to offer assistance
to everyone, regardless of the assignment. He has received letters of commendation
from the citizens for his kind, helpful and compassionate attitude toward the
public. He does his job in a very professional manner.
"Officer Gordon Director is one of the best known and well respected detectives
in the South Florida Law Enforcement Community", said Maas. Director retired
from the Miami Dade Police Department but felt he had much to offer so came to
Sunny Isles Police Department. "I knew of his reputation and his experience and
was delighted to hire him. He brings vast experience that helps younger officers
in their development and brings maturity in handling people that only experience
brings." He has made many arrests and has been an asset in solving crimes within
Sunny Isles Beach.
These two officers work well as a team. On several occasions, one of them arrived
on the scene of a crime and immediately broadcast over the radio the subject
or subject vehicle information only to have the other observe and locate the
criminals. Because of this teamwork, victims of crimes receive back their property,
subjects are arrested and the community has become safer.
Thank you and congratulations, Officer Raul Diaz and Officer Gordon Director,
for you exemplary service to the citizens of Sunny Isles Beach.
