Letter from the Mayor

I would like to thank all the people who have expressed their good wishes on my unopposed reelection as Mayor of the greatest city in South Florida, Sunny Isles Beach. I look forward to continue to leading the Commission’s goal of making Sunny Isles Beach a world renowned Community. Because of our hard work, we are the location of choice for hundreds of new residents relocating or establishing a second home in Florida.

Under my continued administration as Mayor, I will continue to create harmony between the residents and the developers of our City. With the spirit of cooperation and trust we can continue together in accomplishing so much. I believe the goal of our Commission is to set the proper tone for smart growth and to create an environment for all the people of Sunny Isles Beach, residents, business people, and developers, to collectively work for the common goal of enhancing the quality of life within our City. To this end the commission and I are committed to “make it work!”

I will continue to promote Commission meetings that are “open and free” for discussions. I will try to explain complex issues when they arise at Commission meetings so that everyone can understand the issues. Our Commission standard is to work with the people so that everyone can express to us how they feel about a matter and then we can evaluate those expressions when making a determination.

During the next four years of my administration, we have many important projects that will become a legacy of our City. We are about to start work on the new Active Park at 182nd and North Bay Road. In addition to a new softball field we will have an enclosed gymnasium housing a basketball court and center for arts and crafts and other indoor activities for children and adults.

We are actively working with Miami-Dade County School Board officials to partner with the County on developing a K through 8 school that will accommodate the 1600 children now living in our Community. This school facility will be right across the street from the new Active Park and together they will create a wonderful location for our children to learn and play within the City. We will also be working to add additional park lands and develop a water taxi site. Additionally, we have ongoing projects to underground our electric utility lines and replace and enhance the storm water drainage system throughout the remainder of the City. Because of the success of our City, our tax base continues to grow. This has permitted us the opportunity of keeping our tax rate as one of the lowest within the County while giving tax relief to our residents as we just recently accomplished this year when we lowered our millage rate by 13%.

Again I would like to thank you all for your trust in me. I am honored to serve you Mayor and I promise to continue to work hard on your behalf during these next four years. I, along with my fellow Commissioners, will continue to make Sunny Isles Beach the envy of all South Florida and make you proud of our City and its Government.
