City of Sunny Isles Logo

From the desk of Lewis Thaler
By Commissioner Lewis J. Thaler

Commissioner Lewis J. ThalerThose of us who have recently been on the beach have noticed the erosion of a large area of the shore line at the north end of the city. Sunny Isles Beach has requested Miami-Dade County Environmental Department to move up the re-nourishment of the beach.

Many residents have called with complaints about condos and hotels setting up too many chairs on the beach, and making it difficult to walk or find a place to put their chairs and blankets. The City has set up parameters as to how many chairs should be set up and what percentage of the beach they can use, therefore making sure that the beach is accessible to all who want to use it.

Many of you remember Cecile Sippin from Winston Towers, who was an activist in the City and very instrumental in getting Sunny Isles Beach where it is today. She recently moved and in honor of all her hard work and dedication, a beach walk at 189th Street, next to Ocean III, was named for her.

Don’t forget that elections (for Governor, U.S. Senator, State Attorney, etc.) are November 7th.

There is good news and bad news regarding that dreaded word, taxes. The good news is that the millage rate for Sunny Isles Beach will stay the same as this year for 2006-2007 at $2.95per $1,000. This is one of the lowest rates in Miami-Dade County. The bad news is that you may see an increase in your taxes due to the increase in the evaluation of your home or apartment.

New meters that accept credit cards or cash will be installed at four parking locations in the city. The parking lots are located at the Pier Park near the Newport, under the Lehman Bridge, in front of Ocean II, and the Ellen Wynne Beach Walk. They should be installed by the end of the year.

The Town Center Park will have bathrooms and additional lighting that everyone has been requesting by spring 2007.

Remember to read the Sunny Isles Beach Newspaper or watch channel 77 on TV for information about forthcoming trips to theaters, sporting events, etc. Our annual Halloween party will be held on October 27, and October 28 at the SIB Government Center from 7:00 p.m. through 10:00 p.m. It is always great fun, and everyone is welcome.

Madi and I wish you all a fun filled and safe Halloween, and hope to see you at the celebration.
