The Latest from City Hall
By Vice Mayor Lewis J. Thaler

Vice Mayor Lewis J. ThalerAfter surveying the damage that “Wilma” did to our area, I am pleased to report that no lives were lost. Damage to the homes, condos and stores were considerable and will take time to repair but I have no doubt that our City will be as good, if not better than ever. A great big thank you goes to our wonderful police department who kept order and safety in our streets. Despite the large lines of cars waiting for gas, traffic moved smoothly and there were no reports of looting or unlawfulness.

Talk about timing – our brand new Town Center Park was dedicated October 20th and the same week, with schools closed all week, as were the malls and movie theaters, the park was the scene of much activity and laughter. Children and adults were able to enjoy the play equipment or just sit and talk about where they were during the storm.

December should see the opening of the Acqualina. Welcome to our city!!!

The contract has been given for the 182nd Street Active Park and we hope to have it open in 2007. There will be a little league ball field and community center for all our citizens.

As you know our City Manager has left and Chief Fred Maas is our interim City Manager. We are now busy interviewing potential candidates and hope to have a new City Manager by the end of January 2006.

Were you thinking of buying a t-shirt or mug with the City of Sunny Isles Beach logo on it? Well, you are in luck! Tony Roma’s restaurant, next to the Government Center, is selling them. They also have sweatshirts, hats and mugs. So stop in and see for yourself.

Our election for commissioner of Sunny Isles Beach will be held as scheduled November 8th at the regular voting precincts. Please vote.
