Traffic & Safety
By Commissioner Gerry Goodman
There is always discussion of Traffic on Collins Avenue, in Sunny Isles Beach. The speed limit is 35 m.p.h. strictly enforced by the Sunny Isles Beach Police Department. On many occasions due to construction, or FPL, or Bell South, or The Water and Sewer people, they close off one lane. Delivery trucks are not permitted to stop and deliver on Collins Avenue.
We at City Hall are trying to correct some of the problems with traffic on Collins Avenue with traffic lights, turns, etc. DOT must give us approval for all changes. Dade County controls the traffic signals so we have to get their approval. So the street is in our City and the State and County tell us what to do.
Sunny Isles Blvd and The William Lehman Causeway are also part of the DOT State Highway System, they are our entrances and exits to the city. The rest of the streets in Sunny Isles Beach have Stop signs, and the speed limit is 20 m.p.h. It is very important that we obey the signs and speed limits for the safety of our citizens.
Also very important are the School Buses, when they stop to pick up and discharge children, traffic must stop for the safety of the children. People who are in the crosswalks have the right of way to cross and traffic must stop.
I also ask all our citizens to please use crosswalks to cross the streets, do not jay walk, it is very dangerous, especially on Collins Avenue.
Any questions or comments, you can contact me at the Government Center at 18070 Collins Avenue, Sunny Isles Beach, FL 33160, at 305.947.0606, ext. 1752.
