Community Center Opening Soon

By Alyce Hanson

The City of Sunny Isles Beach community center is opening soon at Pelican Community Park. When it is completed it will be home to the offices of the City’s Cultural & Human Services (C&HS) Department and many of the programs and classes we provide the community. Pelican Community Park is located at 18115 North Bay Road and will offer a little league baseball field, playground areas for younger children, picnic tables and an indoor gymnasium for basketball and volleyball.

Cultural & Human Services will be moving their offices to the community center at the end of April 2008. Until their move, C&HS will remain open in the Sunny Isles Beach Government Center at 18070 Collins Avenue where residents will continue to register for cultural events, programs and classes. Summer Camp registration – that begins March 31, 2008 for residents – will also take place in the SIB Government Center. Make note that Summer Camp will be held at Pelican Community Park.

Other programs and classes will be moved gradually to the new community center with notification to all participants of any changes. Watch for any new programming in the fall after the completion of summer camp.

The new community center at Pelican Community Park is located across the street from the new Sunny Isles Beach Community School that is scheduled to open fall of 2008. Both of these new facilities will be a tremendous asset to the City and its residents. There will be some inconveniences as we finish up roads and infrastructure improvements. We appreciate your patience as we transition to our wonderful new facilities. For tolerating road closures and construction activity for many months, the City thanks the residents (especially in that area) for their patience.

Watch for more details about the opening, activities and construction updates on SIB TV Cable Channel 77; on http://www.sibfl.net; and in the Sunny Isles Beach Sun Community Newspaper.
