From the Desk of Lewis J. Thaler, Vice Mayor

The community center is finally open and our children are enjoying the great summer programs organized by the summer camp staff. The fall will bring many new and varied programs for the young and old at the completed facility.

The K-8 Sunny Isles Beach Community School will open in mid August with approximately 1,000 students this first year and a big change for the people of Sunny Isles Beach. Pedestrians and commuters alike will encounter more cars, school buses and different traffic patterns in both the morning and afternoon.

The much needed repairs on the historic Newport Pier will get started in the near future. The completed pier will have fishing and a full restaurant. A tourist information booth may also be added for the parking area near Collins Avenue.

The offshore powerboat race weekend was successful; the City had 2,500 people join the food feast 11th Anniversary celebration at Samson Oceanfront Park on Sunday. About five thousand people watched the race from the beach that afternoon.

I would like to thank all the people in the city of Sunny Isles Beach for their thoughts, cards, phone calls, etc. in memory of Madi, my wife. Again thank you from the bottom of my heart.
