Life in the City

By: Bari Auerbach

‘‘Fun in the City’

In the wake of the thrilling power boat races held in Sunny Isles Beach coinciding with the city’s festive 11th anniversary celebration – it’s time to brainstorm about what other fun and exciting events could be hosted by the city…

NASCAR on Collins – No need to build a racetrack – there are already enough speeding motorists on Collins Avenue to create the next best thing to NASCAR or the Indy 500! Race car drivers could even be allowed to make pit stops at all the RK Shopping Centers – but only if they could get special permits exempting them from being towed faster than the Mach 5.

Condo-Top Tennis – Just think how much fun it would be if the city erected tennis courts on the roof-tops of condos and held tournaments pitting condo board members against each other. Of course the scoring would have to be changed to eliminate tennis terminologies like “love” and the height might make it kind of hard to retrieve the balls.

SIB Open – Even Tiger Woods would be tempted to play miniature golf at a beautiful city venue like Samson Oceanfront Park – featuring the most challenging sand traps and water hazards!

Daring Air Show – It would be quite a sight to see air show pilots attempting to clear the top story of Acqualina or a Trump tower - and then dramatically nose diving towards the Florida Ocean Club – pulling back up just in time to gain enough altitude to engage cruise control and pull off daredevil stunts like parachuting down to land directly on a chaise lounge at the beach.

World Series – Since a baseball field is coming to the new Pelican Community Park, pro teams may want to play the next World Series in Sunny Isles Beach – where residents from all over the world love the series of special community events, activities and excursions planned throughout the year!

Superstar Serenades – Wouldn’t it be really something if the Cultural and Human Services Department could get superstars like Madonna, the Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen to perform at Sunny Serenade concerts? To be honest, this probably won’t ever happen – but maybe some retro clips of Beatles concerts could be shown featuring one of their greatest hits: “Hear Comes the Sun” dedicated to the spirit of enjoying life in the city of Sunny Isles Beach.

Yacht Races: Next year when the city celebrates its 12th anniversary, it would be a great idea to switch from power boat – to yacht races…The city could enter with the Mayor and City Commission serving as captain and crew. Think anyone would be suspicious if the yacht christened “Florida’s Rivera” came in first place??
