Pelican Community Park Celebrates Grand Opening

Get ready to dance, play, take yoga classes, learn pilates, computers, languages, have a birthday party and much more all in one place – at the new Pelican Community Center.

The new facility, 18115 North Bay Road, is located directly across from the new Sunny Isles Beach Community School.

The public was invited on August 23rd, 2008 from 2:00-5:00 p.m. to join the Grand Opening celebration. The celebration included a ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by Mayor Norman S. Edelcup, Vice Mayor Lewis J. Thaler, Commissioners Roslyn Brezin, Gerry Goodman, Bud Scholl, and former and founding Commissioner Danny Iglesias, with a brief history of the park given by City Manager John Szerlag. Other activities included an inaugural t-ball game with the North Miami Beach Optimist Little League, ceramics by Color Me Mine, hot shots basketball competition for all ages, bridge tournament, games, Miami Heat Dancers, and more.

The event was a great success and would not have been possible without those who volunteered their time and efforts. Phallon and Pharin Walker displayed their talent by singing the National Anthem prior to the baseball game. Even Assistant City Manager Doug Haag generously donated his time to host the baseball game, giving the participants an opportunity to hear their names amplified in sound around the field.

In addition, the city’s new Calendar of Events and Programs for September through November was distributed so residents can sign-up for all the exciting future events the city has to offer. More copies are available at Pelican Community Park so if you missed this event, be sure to stop by and pick one up or visit our website, www.sibfl.net for a virtual copy.

“The new Community Center will be an excellent source of pride and will enhance the quality of life in our city.” said Susan Simpson, Director of Cultural and Human Services. With the addition of this facility, the city will be able to increase the number of activities available to our residents, and offer a variety of programs for all ages, including personal enrichment, fine arts appreciation, and social activities.
