The Miami-Dade Coastal Cleanup along with the City of Sunny Isles Beach organized a very successful beach cleanup event. The event took place at Pier Park, 16501 Collins Ave. on Saturday, September 20th, 2008. This regional effort is part of the 22nd Annual International Coastal Cleanup sponsored by the Ocean Conservancy and supported locally by businesses and environmentally conscious organizations.
More than 100 volunteers scoured the entire Sunny Isles Beach coast to clean the beach of debris and trash that had accumulated during the summer months. The debris collected included cigarette butts, bottles, cans, plastic, parts of tires and pipes, Styrofoam, strapping, rope, wire, netting and miscellaneous debris that washes up on our shores. After the clean-up, volunteers were treated to an Appreciation Party at Miami Seaquarium.
The obvious benefit is a more beautiful beach, but the more serious benefit is a healthier marine and avian population. In an area that relies heavily on tourism, we are proud to give back to our community and show everyone that Sunny Isles Beach truly is “Florida’s Riviera”.
We want to give a special thank you to all the volunteers who generously donated their time for such a worthy cause. If you would like more information on future events, please contact us at 305.792.1706.
