The New Year is here and that means everyone is thinking about resolutions. I would like to suggest that this year you add a new set of family resolutions to those standard one about resolving to diet and exercise and eat healthy. This year, parents and children should make some resolutions that will impact your child’s performance at school. Here are my suggestions for your family’s New Year’s Resolutions 2009!
Parents should resolve to: |
Students should resolve to: |
Model the importance of reading by spending 15 minutes a day reading the newspaper, a book, or magazine at a time when your children can observe you. |
Read for 30 minutes a day. Vary your genre. Read a book of poems, a biography, a science fiction novel. |
Ask their children about the books they are reading for AR. Ask them to give you a summary of the plot and then why the author wrote the book. Also ask them about their favorite character and why they chose that one. |
Share the plot and characters of the book they are reading for AR with a family member. Maybe they would like to read it also. |
Establish a time and place for their children to complete their homework each day. |
Take responsibility for completing their homework each night and asking their parent to check it. |
Check their child’s agenda and book bag for important announcements from the teachers and the school. |
Give their parents important notices that the school and their teacher send home.
|
Post the monthly calendar so you can check what is happening at school. Log onto to www.sib.dadeschools.net each week and check the calendar for updates. If your child’s teacher maintains a website, check that regularly as well. |
Listen carefully to the morning announcements and remind their parents about meetings and special events at school. Bring home the monthly calendar. |
The key to educational success is communication – knowing what is happening at your child’s school, knowing what your child is studying, and knowing how your child is progressing. SIBCS is committed to providing parents with information in all of these areas. Parents must make the same commitment to stay informed, to monitor their student’s studies, and to check on their achievement. Let’s all resolve to make our students shine in 2009!
