Sunny Isles Beach Ocean Rescue Beach Safety

By Justin Broman, Ocean Rescue Supervisor

The City of Sunny Isles Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches around. Our city is consistently upgrading, beautifying and making new changes for our residents and visitors to enjoy. The most important thing is to know that your family’s safety is always first. The Ocean Rescue division is always working in conjunction with our police department in making sure that this is the safest city around. As the Ocean Rescue supervisor, I have worked on many different types of calls with our police department and I must say that the Sunny Isles Beach Police Department is the best of the best. They are our backup and even sometimes our lifeline as well as for our patrons. They assist us on all emergencies on the beach and on the water too. The dispatch division for our police department is always keeping us informed with vital information as well as possible emergencies that may occur.

Sunny Isles Beach Ocean Rescue responds to all types of emergencies. For example: medical calls, first aids, troubled swimmers, unruly patrons, missing persons, water craft accidents and  enforcing daily rules and regulations. All lifeguards in Sunny Isles Beach carry a hand held portable radio that is directly linked to our police dispatch; when a lifeguard on the beach is in need of police assistance, for controlling a scene or enforcing our rules they are just a push of a button away. The police response time is always quick and accurate and much appreciated.

Teamwork is so important here on the beach, with other lifeguards and other departments here in the city. So when you’re on the beach you will have a comforting feeling with your families safety knowing there is a huge group effort going on at all times for you. The lifeguards here have all the tools and equipment for responding to emergencies. Guards respond to swimmers in distress using buoys and rescue boards, which are located on every vehicle and at all towers. We also have 3 jet skis fully equipped and always ready to go in case an emergency occurs. Our jet skis patrol our swim zone line, with fully trained lifeguards that are monitoring radios linked to dispatch and other guards. With all the water sports going on we can always get to someone in distress very fast. A major link of our beaches safety is the Sunny Isles Beach Police Marine vessel. All a lifeguard needs to do is call dispatch or call directly to the police vessel and inform Sergeant Bobby Randazzo. Our police vessel is there to back us up very rapidly along our coastline for water emergencies or any marine violation.

Sunny Isles Beach is always doing ongoing training, practicing possible scenarios, physical training to provide you and your family a safe environment to enjoy. Our main objective on a daily basis is to prevent any type of emergency from happening, but when one does occur, we will always be ready to assist our beach guests in any possible way. So when you come out to the beach go over and speak to our friendly lifeguards and ask them any questions you might have about daily conditions, possible hazards, or anything about the local area. Hope to see you at the beach, and remember ALWAYS SWIM NEAR A LIFEGUARD!!!
