St. Maarten is the smallest territory in the world shared by two sovereign states, only 96 sq. km (37 sq. miles), about half the area of Washington, D.C. St. Maarten (Sint Maarten) is the Dutch half, and St. Marteen is French. When you cross the international border you see the sign BIENVENUE PARTIE FRANCAISE, attesting to the peaceful coexistence between the two nations. The island was officially split in 1648, and many visitors still climb Mount Concordia, near the border, where the agreement was reached.

Carmen and Miguel De Dios hold a copy of the Sunny Isles Beach Sun at Beacon Point in Saint Thomas, the U.S. Virgin Islands. The island is in the Caribbean Sea and is an unincorporated territory of the United States. The capital and major port is Charlotte Amalie. About 47% of the US Virgin Islands residents live on this island of 31.24 square miles (80.9 km2).
