City offers up-to-date information on an internet-based geographical information system.
By Kristy Fritts, GIS Coordinator, Information Technology Departments
Have you ever heard the old saying “Location is everything?” We believe that here in Sunny Isles Beach.
The City has found an innovative way to embrace the potential of ‘location’ for the benefit of its residents and City staff through the implementation of its very own Geographic Information System (GIS).
GIS uses a combination of “spatial” information and powerful web-based tools to bring residents a whole new way of finding useful information about local transportation services, public schools, parks and beach accesses, property information and much more.
The City’s GIS staff works year round to provide up-to-date information about the city and its many amenities. Partnered with the Application Development team from Calvin, Giordano & Associates, the City created a state-of-the-art internet map service for residents and the general public to access information about the City. This contemporary and convenient application, that provides information about your neighborhood, is now available in a friendly, easy-to-use website.
By entering a property address, property folio number, or owner name you can retrieve information about a specific location, or you can choose to begin viewing the entire city.
The user can then decide which information ‘layers’ to turn on or off by provided categories. If a specific property is selected, the user may take advantage of “Find Nearest” search tools that provide the user with the closest of numerous features like newspaper boxes, bus stops, and parks.
Additional information is also available, such as newspaper box publication names, bus stop route numbers, and park hours.
The service also provides high resolution aerial photography of the entire city. Residents can look up their voting districts, school districts, zoning, to name just a few.
Curious to try it out? We invite you to visit www.sibfl.net. On the left-hand side of the home page, under Sunny Life, click on City Maps and then click on the link for the City’s GIS application.
Other choices available on the City Maps page of www.sibfl.net are links to:
- Miami-Dade County’s GIS where you will find property assessed values, tax information and date of last sale.
- City’s collection of QuickMaps in pdf format that will print on 8 ½” x 11” paper. Choices here include City maps showing streets, community shuttle bus stops, voting districts, land use, zoning, FEMA DFIRM zones, City parking areas/lots, etc.
If you have any questions about the City’s GIS, please call: Kristy Fritts, GIS Coordinator at 305.792.1947.
