By Chief Fred Maas, Sunny Isles Beach Police Department
Just before the end of the school year, CAREER DAY, is traditionally held for the school children. It is a wonderful opportunity for them to see and learn more about the jobs that many people do, including their parents and those in public service. The police department has always played an instrumental role in these Career Days. Now that the City has its own school, we are able to really personalize the opportunity for the kids and students who see us everyday!
Thanks to Ms. Capote and her class of first graders, I received a huge batch of “thank you” and “love” letters from the kids following our presentation from the Sunny Isles Beach Police Department. As you can tell, the K-9 unit always seems to leave an impression. However, my heart is touched by those who thank us for coming; tell us how impressed they are about the job we do; tell us how they might want to be an officer when they grow up; and sign off their letters “your friend”! The relationships built at an early age can last a lifetime. And for a community, that can mean EVERYTHING! Here is a sample of some of their letters to us. A special note of thanks to Officer Rob Ostrov of our K-9 unit and “Diesel,” as well as Ms. Capote who saw fit to have her class express appreciation in their own words for their “friends” at the police department.
