By Dr. Annette Weissman, Principal SIB Community School
This popular TV show challenges adults to respond to questions that a typical fifth grader would know. I am certain many of you would agree with me that most of the questions are very difficult. You probably find yourself saying, “Of course I know that, I just can’t remember it right now.” Like the students who participate on this program, the students of SIBCS are exposed to rigorous curriculums in reading, mathematics, science, and social studies. I was so proud to announce to the community that Sunny Isles Beach Community School earned a school grade of an “A” from the State of Florida.
The new school year presents new challenges and new opportunities for all of our students and staff. First and foremost we must work just as diligently this year to maintain our “A” grade. This requires that special dedication that our staff is already known for; it requires the continued community support that Sunny Isles Beach is already known for; and it requires the ongoing involvement of our parents which our PTSA is already known for; and, of course, it requires the active engagement of all our children who have already proven that they are up to the task. I have every confidence that this winning team will continue to raise the bar and set higher standards to strive for and meet.
As everyone renews their energy this summer, school takes second place to camp activities and family vacations. But please remember, it is never too soon to take inventory of your school supplies and uniform needs. Pretty soon our newspapers will be announcing school sales, so be prepared to advantage of them. Check the school website for your child’s school supply list, and keep in mind that your children need supplies for your home as well.
Also remember that it is never too early to start a conversation about the importance of education and student goals for the year. What does your child want to accomplish this year in reading? Does he want to increase the number of AR points he earned last year? What about grades? Did he make the honor roll last year? How was his attendance? Any tardies? Do effort or conduct need to be targeted for improvement this year? Now is the time to begin thinking and strategizing. Once the goals are defined, the steps for achieving them must be delineated. Help your children learn the process of identifying an area that needs attention, setting a goal, and taking the action to make it a reality. This is a valuable life lesson that will be a model for them throughout their lives.
Enjoy the rest of your summer. We look forward to welcoming you back August 24, 2009.
