The Building Department Remembers William Whiteman, Chief Building Inspector

Bill Whiteman first came to work for the City of Sunny Isles Beach in the year 2000. It was certainly a privilege to have such a highly technical man in the field of construction, business, and inspections with the professional demeanor as Bill’s, working for us. He always had an open attitude to any problem and always found the appropriate solution to help resolve any issue.

Besides being a professional peer, he was also a trusted friend to the entire Building Department organization. Many staff members sought Bill’s expertise and advice.  Bill’s commitment to this community, staff, and profession was second to none.

We all considered Bill a friend and we will miss him very much. Our hearts and prayers go out to Bill’s wife, children, grandchildren, and great grand children.

Clayton L. Parker, Building Official

I will miss Bill a lot. I only knew him for a short time, 5 years. We always had fun on the golf course and I am sorry that I did not know him 20 years.

If you had the pleasure of knowing Bill, you would know what an incredible person he was.
Our department has suffered a great loss. But we all have something to take from knowing him. He was an inspiration to all.

He was a walking book of knowledge, a kind hearted sole who loved coming to work.  He was family.
Bill was a great man, a very special man.
He was not only my co-worker, but my friend.
Wild Bill, Buckeye Bill as I called him, was my dance teacher, and nutritional counselor!

My friend you will always hold a special place in my heart.
I will never forget your smile, laughter and ahh man’s
Your friendship meant the world to me.
I am blessed to have known you.
I miss you Bill.

Brenda Long, High Rise/New Project Coordinator

The passing of “Mr. Bill” definitively leaves an empty hole in our Department. Bill’s charming smile, great attitude towards life, and passion for his work, are all attributes that will be greatly missed here in the office. He was an inspiration to all of us, a great family man, and a wonderful inspector. Bill was always willing to help his peers and the community. His great disposition towards work and life made him an asset to Our Department and the City as a whole.
Furthermore, he was a wonderful and beloved fried. His life stories and his great sense of humor made us laugh here in the office. Something we had in common… our love for sweets, especially chocolates. Billie will never let a good dessert pass by.
Bill will greatly be missed. However, our hope is that one day we will laugh again with him as we reunite in heaven with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
“For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come,  nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. “(Romans 8:38-39)

I remember Bill as a family man, who adored his wife Molly and spoke proudly of all his children and their children.   Bill’s love of life extended to his co-workers and friends. He did this through jokes, advice, and by example.  To anyone who knew Bill, he is an unforgettable and loving person and I am glad to have called him my friend.

John Cronin, Plumbing Inspector

Imagine this:  Mr. Bill teaching me how to do the camel dance!! Now, that was funny.
There are so many good things to say about Bill. I will only have great memories of him.
Bill taught me a lot about plan review and reading sound control spec sheets. We could talk and talk about things that pertain to construction work. He loved to teach and I enjoyed learning.
Did you know that Bill loved jazz music?
Bill was very special. He was my friend and I will miss him.
Love always,

Terry Walker, Permit & licensing Clerk Supervisor

PS: Hey Bill, have I told you today… “I love you man.”

What I remember most about “Mr. Bill” is his integrity. A truly dedicated employee, he set an example for all of us. He was a man of strong values, but above all a kind, compassionate, and sincere human being. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was always willing to share a smile. He will live on in our hearts.

Federico Jimenez, Permit & Licensing Clerk

Bill was a friend, a golf buddy and teacher, a comedian, full of life, a good inspector, loyal, dedicated, a sports enthusiast, a family man, and will be missed very much by everyone.  I am honored to have had the chance to meet someone like Bill.

Jim Hill, Building Plans Examiner ..........................................................................................................................................................................................................................

I met Bill when I joined the staff at Sunny Isles Beach. I couldn’t believe someone in his late seventies was still working as a Building Inspector, full time. None the less, once I went with Bill in the field, he showed me, I had a hard time keeping up with him! Bill always liked meeting the public. He also enjoyed the company of his fellow workers as we enjoyed his. I will miss Bill and will think of him all the time.

John Hart, Senior Building Inspector
